Although sponge filters are a seemingly basic method of aquarium filtration, they actually serve several purposes and are popular for every level of fish tank enthusiast. Sponge filters offer both mechanical and biological filtration. The sponge is able to trap larger pieces of debris to clear the tank, and the good sized surface area allows good bacteria to breed, while keeping water free of harmful contaminants. You will need an aquarium pump to attach to any sponge filters you use. Air driven sponge filters work via the pump pushing water inside of the sponge filter. The sponge then absorbs this water, which attracts any debris into the filter and allows good bacteria to grow at the same time.
