Aquarium Internal Filters

Fish tank internal filters sit inside your aquarium, rather than outside of it. For this reason, aquarium internal filters are often better suited to small to medium-sized fish tanks that are home to small and medium-sized fish. Fish tank internal filters are available in multiple styles, including undergravel filters, canisters and (the most popular choice), sponge filters.

Sponge filters are among the most common types of fish tank internal filters because they provide both mechanical and biological filtration and are low cost. They are also beneficial for breeding tanks, as the sponge does not trap fish fry. When using aquarium internal filters, you will also need an aquarium air pump and probably some check valves to keep your system secure.  

Choosing the right size of fish tank filters will depend on the size of your aquarium.
